After the RMB Workshops in Marl (Germany), Coimbra (Portugal) and Istanbul (Turkey) now is time to work in Detmold. Apply now for the 4th RMB International Student Workshop in Detmold, Germany. It takes places from 12.05. – 16.05.2019.
The workshop topic is: “AFTER THE MILITARY HAS GONE”.
THEME Over the last 10 years, most of the British Army in Germany returned to the UK. Since the start of their presence after World War 2 they occupied existing barracks, build new ones and also build quarters for their soldiers. Many of those barracks and also complete housing quarters are left empty now. In most cities and dense urban region, it is not a problem to find new owners, new uses. In less populated regions with different dynamics, this is a much more challenging task. For the barracks in Detmold, step by step, new users are found. For the former soldiers and their families dwellings, this is much more difficult. The city of Detmold is considering demolition for the larger part of the former British settlement. A pity, not only because an important part of Detmold´s history will disappear but also since both the structure of the apartment blocks and the rowhouses are flexible enough to allow for more contemporary forms of living and dwelling. Also, the quality of urban space and green has a lot of potentials.
In the workshop, students will develop concepts and strategies for an ex-British military housing quarter in Detmold, Germany. Through the reuse of the existing buildings, new typologies will be developed that will better meet contemporary housing needs and update the neighbourhood as a whole.
Experimental, innovative, inside out and, lateral design thinking will be encouraged. The development of strategies of how these approaches can be put to work in a real project is an inseparable part of the workshop’s end results
Students working in Detmold will get online assistance from peer groups of students in Coimbra, Lisbon, Antwerp and Istanbul. They will feed the Detmold groups with cases and examples, also make designs for parts of the overall projects (i.e. kitchen, layout, windows, garden/green) and act as critical reviewers to the project.
FURTHER INFORMATION For this workshop a total of international 40 Master students will be selected, 4 – 6 from each university, to form different working groups. Each group will be constituted by students from the five partner universities of RMB project and tutors that will support the teamwork. Each international team will work on a specific architectural typology and will have a tutor from Istanbul, a second from one of the four other universities.
APPLICATION \\ A letter expressing the willingness and interest to participate – interest on reuse, on housing, school, and industrial modern architecture (maximum: 300 words) \\ The demonstration of the ability to develop analysis and projects in teamwork: Synthesis portfolio showing previous experience (maximum: 1 A4) \\ A proof of design, draft, and digital skills in a portfolio showing some examples of the required skills (maximum: 1 A4)
SCHOLARSHIP | FINANCIAL SUPPORT If you are one of the selected students you get the following grant: \\ Travel costs: 275,00 -360,00 € \\ Free housing (in the workshop working area) \\ Meals at University canteen or at the accommodation place (RMB will offer the products to be cooked or prepared by the students)
There are no extra fees to attend this workshop and the RMB Colloquium! Only students from the partner universities from the RMB consortium can receive funding.
