As an academic Kathrin Volk is a founding member of the urbanLab and leader of public funded and EU projects. Currently, she is leading a project that explores nature-based solutions and how to use them to incorporate healthy corridors in social housing neighbourhoods to foster climate adaptivity and healthy cities.

Interested in urban commoning she is addressing issues related to the notion of everyday aesthetics that are revealed by traces of use or special user-generated places in the public realm and on the aesthetics of the imperfection and the unexpected. Based on that she is focussing on social design as an approach to creating healthy and lively environments.

Kathrin Volk has served as a visiting critic in various universities and is the advisor of the study grant “Studienfond OWL”. She is an author of articles that have been published in international journals. Since 2016 she is Vice Dean for Research and Internationalization at Detmold School for Architecture and Interior Architecture.
